Although he has long been known as a characterdriven songwriter, Okkervill Rivers Will Sheff announced that this album is a work of autobiography.
The Silver Gymnasium is set in a very specific time and place from Sheffs childhood in 1986 in the small town of Meriden, NH, where Sheffs parents worked as teachers for a boarding school. Sheff conceived the album as a tribute to the spirit of pre-adolescence, meant to evoke the nostalgic feeling of an action figure you found in the woods.
This was also the era of video games like Leisure Suit Larry, Maniac Mansion, and Kings Quest. To pay homage to those early games, Sheff created his own online adventure game in partnership with Eyes And Ears Benjamin Miles.
The album comes on CD, deluxe double vinyl, and digital download.
The vinyl format comes with a copy of the album on CD.
