Description
The story of dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pips ascendancy is the stuff of indie legend. Hot off the CD burner, their first song Thou Shalt Always Kill was sent to XFMs John Kennedy in demo form and, within 24 hours, was on the airwaves, swiftly followed by a handmade video which has now chalked up 4million views on YouTube, and a track which still features on amongst the decades defining tracks. Their critically acclaimed debut album Angles was released in May 2008 and landed a Top 40 chart position. After two years of solid touring Dan and Pip produced their follow up Logic Of Chance, and their burgeoning fanbase made it a brace of Top 40 hits in March 2010.
Four years on, with a gap for respective solo outings and radio show fronting, dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip return with their third album, Repent Replenish Repeat, on Sunday Best.
Beat heavy, sparse yet effective, Repent Replenish Repeat is their most complete work yet. Ploughing a sharply defined furrow of glitched, sharp hip hop, with Pip producing his most lucid vocals whilst dan reaches for a tight production pallet of hard beats, dark strings and layered melodic reverb.
Lead off track Stunner set the tone perfectly, premiered on Pips own weekly XFM radio show the video has already clocked up over 170K plays and their Autumn tour is a sell out. Lead single Gold Teeth features production props from Flux Pavilion an attack on consumerism with a huge beat and hook to match.
Elsewhere, theres the atmospheric Terminal and Porter tackling terminal illness and mental health, the club bouncing Nightbus Sleepers, grinding Heroism and Pips last political song Stiff Upper Lip, featuring Itch, formerly of King Blues.
The success of their solo albums and their continued live profile suggest Repent Replenish Repeat is set to repeat the trick.
Repent Replenish Repeat is released on Sunday Best Recordings on LP (including download code and full lyrics).
