Released in 1993 as a companion to Rid of Me, 4 Track Demos presents PJ Harvey’s songs in their rawest form — recorded at home on a four-track cassette recorder before the full album sessions with Steve Albini. Stripped of production, the recordings reveal the skeletal power of Harvey’s songwriting: just voice, guitar and an intensity that needs no embellishment.
Far from feeling like offcuts, these versions often feel more immediate and visceral than their studio counterparts. A fascinating document of one of the most singular artists in British music, faithfully reissued with vinyl cutting by Jason Mitchell.
