Description
Blake Mills is a guitarist, composer, and Grammy Award nominated producer. Having worked with artists such as Jackson Browne, Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple, John Legend, Jay-Z, Lana Del Ray, Norah, Jones, Conor Oberst and many more, Mills has made a huge name for himself within the current landscape of recorded music. He has two solo albums under his own name, and his third, Look due out at the end of November, is a concentrated soundscape experience inspired by Japanese synth guitars from the 1970s. An exciting excursion from his previous singer-songwriter material, this release fits in line with similarly groundbreaking records such as Brian Enos Music for Airports. The music on Look was not created with the intention of ever being heard. In the spring of 2017 I took up a small collection of vintage guitar synthesizers that Roland made at the end of the 1970s. These machines were totally unfamiliar to me but immediately inspiring, and extremely intuitive. Since they rarely produce the same results twice, my process of learning how to play these instruments was through recording them. Look is a document of that experience; improvisational music elaborated upon with the help of musicians Natalie Merring, Rob Moose, Joseph Lorge, Sam Gendel, Matt Chamberlain, and Kane Ritchotte.
