Description
NEW YORK, NY (May 7, 2020) To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Shaggys diamond-selling album, Hot Shot, a brand-new album entitled Hot Shot 2020, featuring updated versions of the biggest hits and most beloved fan favorites across Shaggys catalog, along with a number of never-before-heard tracks, will be released July 10 (complete track listing for both the standard & deluxe versions included below). For Hot Shot 2020, says Shaggy, I wanted to modernize songs like It Wasnt Me, Angel, Luv Me Luv Me and take them to turbo, along with my other hits Boombastic and Oh Carolina. We retained their original energy and brought in different vibes while exploring some sounds wed never tried before.
Throughout the new album, Shaggy showcases the boundary-breaking musicality and world class songwriting chops that have made him a global phenomenon. In shaping the albums modern sound, he paid careful attention to the rhythmic component of each track, often introducing elements of trap, electronic music, and modern-day hip-hop. As a result, Hot Shot 2020 unfolds with a complex and commanding sonic paletteheavier beats, harder-hitting drums, potent bass linesall the while preserving the spirit and integrity of the original versions.
While Shaggys exuberant side shines on many of Hot Shot 2020s tracksincluding an electro- meets-dancehall reworking of his platinum-selling single Boombasticthe album also spotlights his undeniable sensitivity on songs like Strength of a Woman. Further revealing the eclectic sensibilities at the heart of Shaggys artistry, Hot Shot 2020 offers some high-spirited nuggets. Along with an infectiously playful version of Under the Sea from Disneys The Little Mermaid (Shaggy recently starred as Sebastian for ABCs live televised special), the new album includes his super-charged rendition of Barbadian artist Eddy Grants Electric Avenue (he first performed the song at the 2019 benefit concert for the Rainforest Fund; a charity co-founded by Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler). Another track closely tied to Shaggys heritage is his horn-powered, groove-worthy cover of Peter Toshs rebel-minded Buk-In-Hamm Palace. Recorded in both New York City and at the legendary Anchor Recording Studio in Jamaica, Shaggy, managed by the Cherrytree Music Company, called on a stellar lineup of producers for Hot Shot 2020, including Martin Kierszenbaum (Sting, Lady Gaga, Madonna), Shane Hoosong (Vybz Kartel), Dave Audé (Bruno Mars, Selena Gomez), and Dwayne iLL Wayno Shippy (Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj).
