The Higher The Sky, The Deeper The Ocean is the hotly anticipated return of Nottingham duo Coyote — Richard “Ampo” Hampson and Timm Sure, founders of the celebrated Is It Balearic? label — to Phil Cooper’s NuNorthern Soul imprint. A six-track 12 inch vinyl EP and spiritual successor to their acclaimed 2022 mini-album Everything Moves, Nothing Rests, this release offers an even deeper and more atmospheric exploration of their signature Balearic, downtempo and dub sound. Essential listening for fans of underground electronic music, ambient house vinyl and Balearic records.

Named in honour of a quote from Pedro Alonso’s documentary series On the Ship of Enchantment, the EP carries a meditative, subtly psychedelic energy throughout. Yearning opener ‘Muted Beauty’ delivers the kind of effects-laden, sample-sporting ambient bliss reminiscent of Fila Brazillia’s mid-90s output, before the equally languid ‘Go All The Way’ layers delay-drenched acoustic guitars, spoken word snippets and gaseous chords over a slow-motion groove. ‘A Drop In The Ocean’ tips its hat to early 90s ambient house, fusing dub-wise bass, heady deep house sonics and spaced-out Balearic synth-pop references into one glorious cut.

On the B-side, late psychedelic visionary Terrence McKenna appears in sampled form on the tabla-driven ‘Dolce Far Niente’ — a musical hallucination that conjures images of lying in the Mexican desert beneath a starry sky. ‘Riviera Sound’ brings a chunkier, sun-splashed energy with deep dubby bass, sustained piano and punchy downtempo breaks, while the superb closing cut ‘No Coincidences’ weaves jazzy double bass samples, twinkling keyboards, subtle acid lines and Latin percussion into a street soul-adjacent groove.

Beyond their own Is It Balearic? label, Coyote have showcased their craft on International Feel, Music For Dreams, Needwant, MM Discos and Citizens of Vice — and The Higher The Sky, The Deeper The Ocean sits proudly among their finest work.
