Blood Money is etched. Its scratched out in bold, dark lines with marimba, trumpet and bass clarinet and contains some of Tom Waits most memorable melodies.
Blood Money is flesh and bone, earthbound, said Waits. The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage, the human meat wheelThey are more carnal. I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth. I like songs to sound as though theyve been aging in a barrel and distressed.
Blood Money follows along the same lines as Alice, in that it was also originally written for an opera. Inspired and loosely based on the sociopolitical play Woyzeck, which was written in 1837. This is a more traditional sounding Tom Waits album, mixing folk, country, blues and jazz ballads, therefore not as avant-garde as Alice. Both albums have been released simultaneously.
