Description

After exploding onto the Jamaican music scene in the early 60s, the trio of Frederick Toots Hibbert, Nathaniel Gerry McCarthy and Henry Raleigh Gordon collectively known as the Maytals establish themselves as one of the islands leading acts with a series of ska hits for a number of local record producers. Their hit rate continued throughout the rock steady and reggae years, culminating in the 1969 UK chart entry, Monkey Man, and when Chris Blackwell ended his association with Trojan Records in 1972, the group were among the first Jamaican acts he signed to his Island label. In 1975, the trio commenced work on their first Island-financed long player with their efforts culminating in the widely acclaimed Reggae Got Soul album. Overseen by American producer, Joe Boyd, it is arguably their finest collection for the company, with its popularity ensuring what proved to be a long and successful relationship between Island and the group. Now, 40 years after the group cut the tracks in Jamaica, the seminal LP finally receives the deluxe treatment it has long since deserved. Featured along with the original 10 tracks are an equal number of bonus tracks, comprising rare contemporary material, much of which has until now never seen issue. For those wishing to hear reggae at its most dynamic and powerful, you need look no further.
